2.5.5 Acceleration

The School District of Escambia County recognizes the need for some high achieving and/or gifted students to receive a challenging program of study beyond that which is provided to their same-age peers in a traditional grade-to-grade progression. Students who exhibit a pattern of high performance as evidenced by a preponderance of existing data from multiple sources may be referred for consideration of acceleration. The school-based Response to Instruction (RtI) committee, including the principal and student’s parent/guardian, will convene to determine the appropriateness of acceleration as well as the plan for implementation. The School District shall provide students with access to enroll in courses available through the Florida Virtual School and award credit for successful completion of such courses. Access shall be available to students during or after the normal school day and through summer school enrollment.

Transfers Wthin the State of Florida

Students determined eligible anywhere in the State of Florida will automatically receive services in Escambia County.  The current Educational Plan will be implemented or reviewed to provide the most appropriate level of service.

Transfers Outside the State of Florida

All transfer students must meet initial eligibility requirement in the State of Florida.  Please see the edibility criteria above.  A psychological assessment must be administered by an individual licensed in the state. If an Educational Plan is written for the student in the gifted program by the sending district, that plan will be honored ever if initial eligibility can not be established immediately.  If an Educational Plan is not required, the student will not be placed into gifted classes until the assessment can be completed.  Those students will not be required to take the screening assessments which all other students must take.  In most instances when a district writes an Educational Plan, parents give consent for the services.  Parents may revoke consent in Escambia County and wait for the assessments necessary for eligibility to be completed.

Military Transfers

Based on the Military Compact on Educational Opportunities for Military Children, students who have been identified gifted will receive the same level of services as they received in the sending school district until initial eligibility can be established.  Revocation of consent may be used to document that services were offered but declined until the assessment were completed.
